Wizards of the Coast Bets Big on Unreal Engine 5 for Future D&D Games

Gaming 2 days ago

Wizards of the Coast plans to heavily invest in Unreal Engine 5 for future Dungeons & Dragons video games, as revealed by CEO John Hight. The strategy includes a dedicated digital art team to create shared assets, speeding up development. Giant Skull, led by industry veteran Stig Asmussen, is already working on a UE5-based D&D title.

Unreal Engine 5, released in 2022, offers film-quality graphics and realistic animations, powering major games like Fortnite and Cyberpunk 2. WotC’s move follows the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, though their previous UE5 project, Sigil VTT, was scrapped after costly development.

The shared-asset approach could deliver new D&D games faster while maintaining consistent quality. This aligns with WotC’s broader franchise strategy, but the gamble’s success remains uncertain as the gaming community watches closely.
