NHS Expands Access to Weight-Loss Drugs for Summer ’Beach Body Ready’ Push

The UK’s NHS is launching an £85 million trial to expand access to weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro, allowing patients to obtain them through local pharmacies without lengthy specialist consultations. Science Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the goal of making these treatments available to all backgrounds, though his ’beach-ready’ remarks sparked backlash for oversimplifying obesity.
Critics, including health advocates, warn against framing obesity as an appearance issue and stress the need for specialist oversight. The pilot, partly funded by Eli Lilly, will test distribution via pharmacies, apps, and home visits, targeting England’s 28% obese and 36% overweight adults.
While the drugs mimic gut hormones to suppress appetite, opponents argue taxpayers shouldn’t fund ’quick fixes’ for a preventable condition. The NHS currently spends £11 billion annually on obesity-related costs, prompting the push for scalable solutions despite concerns over stigma and sustainability.
