China’s Chikungunya Outbreak Sparks Global Travel Alerts

Health 11 days ago

China is battling a severe chikungunya virus outbreak, with Foshan as the epicenter. Heavy rains and warm temperatures have fueled mosquito populations, leading to rapid transmission. Authorities enforce quarantine measures and mosquito control, including drone spraying and fines for non-compliance.

The CDC has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for China, urging precautions like repellent and long clothing. While 46 US cases this year are travel-related, experts warn local transmission could occur. Two vaccines are available, but pregnant women are advised to avoid high-risk areas.

Symptoms include fever and joint pain, with severe cases risking heart or brain damage. As global travel resumes, the outbreak highlights the need for vigilance against mosquito-borne diseases.
