AI-Powered Hearing Glasses Enhance Clarity in Conversations
Health 8 days ago
Researchers in Scotland are pioneering a breakthrough in hearing assistance with AI-powered smart glasses. The device features a built-in camera that records conversations and uses visual cues to identify the primary speaker. The audio is then sent to a cloud server, where AI isolates the voice and removes background noise, delivering crisp sound to the wearer’s hearing aid almost instantly.
The project, led by Heriot-Watt University, aims to address the challenges faced by traditional hearing aids, such as overlapping voices and ambient noise. Professor Mathini Sellathurai explains the glasses act as ’superpowers’ for hearing aids, allowing users to focus on specific speakers even in noisy environments. The team collaborates with universities in Edinburgh, Napier, and Stirling to refine the technology.
With a prototype expected by 2026, the researchers are working with manufacturers to reduce costs and improve accessibility. Over 1.2 million UK adults struggle with hearing loss, and this innovation could significantly enhance their quality of life. The glasses represent a fusion of AI, cloud computing, and wearable tech, marking a leap forward in assistive devices.
