Military Sergeant Takes Over as Mayor in Corruption Scandal
Politics 7 days ago
A 38-year-old military police sergeant, Jéssica Cormick, is set to become the new mayor of São Bernardo do Campo following the suspension of Marcelo Lima over corruption allegations. Cormick, who joined the police force in 2005 and specialized in public order operations, had only entered politics last year as Lima’s running mate. She now faces the challenge of leading a city embroiled in scandal while completing her public administration MBA.
The corruption investigation began after federal police seized R$14 million and $500,000 from a legislative aide allegedly acting as the scheme’s financial operator. The suspended mayor Lima, his cousin who chairs the city council, and another council member are all targets of the probe. Authorities found evidence of bribery for contracts in construction, healthcare, and maintenance services.
Cormick’s appointment as vice mayor was originally a political move to appeal to conservative voters. As she takes office, the former police officer must navigate the fallout from one of the city’s biggest corruption cases while maintaining public trust. Her law enforcement background may prove crucial as investigations continue into the alleged criminal organization operating within city hall.
