Children’s Gummies Recalled Over Hidden Sleep Drug

Health 2 days ago

Health authorities in the UK have issued an urgent recall for Kids Magnesium Glycinate Gummies after discovering unlisted melatonin in the product. The raspberry-flavored supplements, manufactured by Nutrition Ignition, contained 1.5-1.7mg of melatonin per gummy, a hormone typically prescribed for sleep disorders. The MHRA warns parents to stop use immediately due to risks of headaches, dizziness, and hyperactivity in children.

Melatonin, though naturally produced by the body, has been linked to hospitalizations and infant deaths in rare cases. In the UK, it is only legally available by prescription, but a hidden market has emerged, particularly among parents of neurodivergent children. The MHRA urges reporting any adverse effects through its Yellow Card scheme to monitor potential dangers.

Globally, melatonin supplements remain widely available without prescription in countries like the US and China, despite safety concerns. US data shows a 500% rise in child overdoses over the past decade. Experts caution against unregulated use, as high doses may pose unknown long-term risks, especially for young children.
