Rothesay Acquires O2 Arena Lease in £90m Deal

Business 10 days ago

Rothesay, Britain’s largest pensions insurance specialist, has secured the long-term lease of London’s O2 Arena in a £90m deal with Trinity College Cambridge. The agreement, finalized last week, marks a significant investment for Rothesay, known for sponsoring England’s Test cricket matches. The 999-year lease transfer follows a competitive auction process, with Rothesay emerging as the preferred buyer. The O2, originally the Millennium Dome, has become a global entertainment landmark since its troubled launch in 2000.

Trinity College, founded by Henry VIII in 1546, acquired the O2 lease in 2009 for £24m. The venue, operated by AEG, has hosted countless music, theater, and sports events over the past 25 years. Rothesay’s purchase aligns with its strategy of investing in high-quality real estate to generate predictable returns for its pension beneficiaries. The insurer currently manages over one million pensions, paying out £300m monthly.

In a joint statement, Rothesay and Trinity College expressed satisfaction with the deal, highlighting the O2’s status as a London icon. Rothesay emphasized the venue’s role in its portfolio, ensuring long-term security for pension holders. The acquisition reflects the growing trend of institutional investors targeting iconic properties for stable income streams.
