Claire’s UK and Ireland Stores Face Administration, 2,150 Jobs at Risk

Business 7 days ago

Claire’s, the US-based fashion accessories retailer, is preparing to appoint administrators for its UK and Ireland business, putting 2,150 jobs at risk. The company operates 306 stores across the region, with 278 in the UK and 28 in Ireland. Potential buyers, including Hilco Capital, withdrew interest due to the chain’s financial challenges, leading to the filing of a formal notice with advisory firm Interpath.

Administrators will seek a rescue deal to keep stores open while exploring sale options. Claire’s UK CEO emphasized the brand’s legacy as a go-to destination for ear piercing and trendy accessories. The decision follows the parent company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in Delaware, its second since 2018, as part of efforts to stabilize operations globally.

Analysts attribute Claire’s struggles to declining footfall in retail centers and fierce competition from fast-fashion giants like Shein and Temu, as well as social media-driven shopping trends. Despite its iconic presence on British high streets since 1961, the chain has failed to adapt to shifting consumer habits, leaving its future uncertain.
