Wiretaps Reveal Mastermind Behind Bruno and Dom Murders
Crime 10 days ago
The Federal Police of Brazil uncovered crucial evidence by wiretapping a prison cell where the alleged mastermind of the murders of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips was held. Rubén Dario da Silva Villar, known as ’Colômbia,’ was recorded discussing the crime with the confessed killers, Amarildo da Costa Oliveira and Jefferson da Silva Lima. The recordings revealed Colômbia’s involvement in financing the murders, including providing ammunition to the assassins.
The investigation showed that Bruno Pereira, a Funai agent combating illegal fishing in indigenous lands, was targeted for disrupting Colômbia’s criminal operations. Dom Phillips, a British journalist writing about the Amazon, was killed alongside Bruno in a brutal ambush. The wiretaps also exposed attempts by the killers to alter their testimonies and hide evidence, including weapons and bodies.
Colômbia faces separate charges as the alleged mastermind, while Amarildo and Jefferson await trial for the murders. The case highlights the dangers faced by activists and journalists in the Amazon region, where illegal activities often go unchecked. Dom Phillips’ unfinished book, ’How to Save the Amazon,’ was completed posthumously by colleagues.
